Fresh off a crazy production run, the little-known Chloe Morgan has released two new singles, with more on the way.
The first single, Falling Star, is very poppy. It reminds me of a Katy Perry or a Madonna. My first impression of it was through iPhone speakers, and I thought it a decent pop song – no doubt fitting in with what the mainstream are doing. This one is definitely to be listened to with headphones or a decent sound system though, as on a second listening it was much more rewarding. The lyrics are repetitive and basic, they make me think Chloe is looking for genuine love in a city (Vancouver) that doesn’t always promise it. The production begs for more flair and the mixing is on point.
The second single, Kingdom, is clearly inspired by Chloe’s work as a DJ and features a funky bassline, an exciting breakdown and drop, and I enjoyed this song a whole lot more. Lyrically it is very varied and instrumentally the bass drum hits hard. Chloe tries some new techniques such as a Shepard tone which I love. I hope Kingdom gets released on streaming platforms soon as it’s the kind of song I’d play to try and find a middle ground between my own and my friends tastes – between indie pop and dance music.
Chloe will be playing at the Recovery Festival in New Westminster on September 7th from 12:30pm-1:30pm and 3pm-4pm, 2024.
