As far as drum n bass goes, the drums are pretty consistent. That’s what makes it such an interesting genre to listen to. The core drum n bass beat is a sample derived from the Amen Break, a 60s funk record with the catchy pattern.
Shogun brings a relaxing, refreshing and tasteful bouquet of sounds on this classic drum n bass record. I stumbled across it while listening to a compilation of drum n bass tracks released between 1994 and 2000.
Drum n bass from this golden era is characterised by such record labels as Good Looking Records, Renegade Recordings, and Nothing Records. Absolutely pleasing to the ear, an art-form mastered and dished out like a ladle of iced tea into a crystal-clear glass – a beautiful melody always front and centre.
To me, drum n bass is like a beautiful work of graffiti. Never destined to be mainstream, yet all the richer and more pleasurable for it. If you can find a vinyl copy, check it out, but I just streamed it off this mix on YouTube here.
